About Our Fruit!

OK Farms produces much more than just Coffee, Macnuts and Hearts of Palm.  OK Farms also produces a wide variety of tropical fruits and spices.

Oranges, Tangerines, Tangelos, Limes, Lemons, and Pineapple are some of the well known tropical fruits, while the Lychee, Longans, Rambutans, Apple Bananas, and Rainbow Lemons are some of the not so well known tropical fruits.

OK Farms has many varieties of spices that are in their natural growing enviroments.  We have  cloves, nutmeg, cinnamon and all-spice.

Lychee is an evergreen tree that is a beautiful ornamental that produces a pinkish-red roughly textured fruit.  The fruit is oval shaped and the brittle skin removes easily.  Inside you will find a juicy translucent and gelatinous fruit that does not attach itself to the inner seed.  This fruit was introduced into Hawaii in 1873. Lychee is high in polyphenols and contains 15% more than grapes.

Longans known as the "Dragon Eye" are similar to the lychee but are smaller in size.  Longans are round covered in a smoother, duller, yellow to light brown skin.  The skin of a longan is also brittle and removes easily.  The flesh of the longan is a whitish, translucent somewhat musky but sweet fruit.  The seed it surrounds is round, jet black and shinny, giving it the aspect of an "eye".  In Hawaii the tree was found to grow faster and more vigorous.

Rambutans are equally desirable as the lychee but are not nearly as well known.  The fruit is an obolong, ellyptic shape with a red leathery rind covered in a reddish to yellowish-orange hairs.  In Malay "Rambut" meaning hairlike. Within the skin a white or rose tinted translucent juicy sweet flesh which adheres to the seed.

Apple Bananas are unlike the "Regular Banana" you see in the grocery stores.  Apple Bananas are half the size of a regular banana and can often be "ugly" looking, but don't let this turn you away.  Apple Banans are low in calories and high in potassium, it is naturally sweet and a good source of fiber and Vitamin B6.  Apple banans contain three times more Vitamin C and one and a half more Vitamin A than the regular banana.  Obviously this is why this is considered Hawaii's favorite banana!

(The yellow thing you peel and eat is undoubtedly a fruit containing the seeds of the plant: though since commercially grown banana plants are sterile, the seeds are reduced to little specks. The banana plant is called a 'banana tree' in popular use, but it's technically regarded as a herbaceous plant (or 'herb'), not a tree, because the stem does not contain true woody tissue.)

Eureka Varigated Pink Lemon or "Rainbow Lemon" is a beautiful ornamental tree with green and cream foliage leaves.  The lemon is also striped with green stripes and has a rough and bumpy texture.  Inside the lemon there is a pinkish flesh.  These lemons taste just like the lemons you are use to just juicier and fresher.
