About Our Macadamia Nuts!
Hawaii is known as the macadamia nut capital of the world!
OK Farms has 230 plus acres of smooth shelled macadamia nut trees which equals approximately 20,000 trees planted on the slopes of Mauna Kea above Hilo Town. Our trees produce a half million pounds of macadamia nut in the shell each season.
The Hawaiian Islands are known as the macadamia nut capital of the world growing nearly 95% of the worlds macadamia nuts. Virtually all of the macadamia nuts are grown and come from the "Big Island" of Hawaii. The U.S. is the largest consumer of macadamia nuts.
The macadamia nut tree is native to Australia and comes from a tree that was originally grown for ornamental purposes. The tree was introduced into Hawaii in 1880 where it thrived in the tropical climate.
The macadamia nut is the toughest nut to crack, it takes 300 pounds per square inch to break the nutshell in order to reach the "kernel". The macadamia nut is the hardest of all nut shells.
At OK Farms all of our operations take place on the "Big Island" of Hawaii. The macadamia nuts are not picked from the tree but are allowed to fully ripen and fall from the tree. When the macadamia nut has fallen it is then harvested off the ground by machine delicately not to have damaged the "kernel". The smooth shell surrounding the "kernel" is then removed.
The "Kernel" or "Mac Nut" may then be eaten raw, salted, roasted, or flavored for your enjoyment and preference.
